Next week my kids start school and my gal is going to preschool.  It has generated so much excitement in the house that I figured I'd make her something extra special. 



These little boxes are something that you may just have around.  If not, they're easily found in craft stores or your chain stores in the tool area (for little nails, screws and bits you have around the house).  I made a cover for the top, adhered some paper and a border along the side and ended up with a really cute little treat box that she'll be able to pick a treat from after school next week.



The boxes come in all sizes too so if you have a kiddo going to college, make a big one and fill it with goodies.  You'll be a pretty popular parent!

That's what I had in mind when I started this scrapbook page - I've been finishing up a vintage linen quilt of my own, and was feeling really inspired by the mismatched but magically in-harmony squares of a crazy quilt. Somehow, lots of patterns work together in a crazy quilt - and I always crave a little sewing on my pages, so I wanted to try my own paper version of patchwork.

To get a quick quilted effect, I gathered scraps of patterned paper (from the Sunshine Broadcast, Count Me In, and Starters lines) and my photos and piled them in layers onto my page, stitching as I went. Really, this was way faster than it sounds. If you can sew a straight line, you're good to go! Just press the pedal and do it quickly - perfection isn't needed, here. I scrumpled and ripped things as I went, even taking stitches out in some spots and leaving holes.

I also added a few handstitched bits reminiscent of old handmade quilts and some loose threads, too - I love the carefree loose threads! :)

My dog loves to play with frogs... until they don't move anymore!  :(  I knew right away when I was making this page that Sunshine Broadcast would work perfectly for me.

One thing I've learned about misting... I'm messy.  Yup.  Even with my droplets.  Even with covering my photos with a piece of paper.  I get drops of mist everywhere.  Even worse is when I get them on the threads... and then the bleed onto the page even more.  What I've started doing is this...
Make my layered photo section first.  Stitch it together... or take a picture of it with my phone.

 

 
Then take my background, decide where this group is going to go and mist it so that a little of the drops peek out.  I use a combination of spray paint and spray mists.

And THEN I put my layout together.

With today's layout I wanted to try something just a little different.  My scrapping style is usually all about filling the page.  I need balance and symmetry or I start to twitch!  But I'm so inspired by scrappers who are able to create beautiful little clusters in one area of a page and leave a lot of dead space.  So here is my compromise.  It's almost a mini layout on a page but a HUGE step for me and definitely out of my comfort zone.  

Next time you're looking for a challenge, try taking another style that inspires you and adapt it to make something different but still all your own.

Hi !

Today, I'm showing you a layout with the fabulous "Sunshine Broadcast" collection, perfect for this summer pictures!

I played with various tools to embellish the page, like stars and butterflies Martha Stewart punches, Tim Holtz "rosette" dies, pinking shears, and some tags colored with coordinated Glimmer Mists.

a great idea from marla

I came across an older stash of Sassafras Lass goodies and decided to put them to work.  I had a full set of alphabet die-cuts so I created an art piece that I plan on hanging right along side my family photos.  All that I had to do was punch out the alphabet and replace three of the letters with a deeper colored cardstock.  It was super easy and fun to create!
