Crafty Thought - by Marla Kress
I’ve been traveling a lot this summer with my family and while I haven’t had much time to be creative at home, I’ve been taking it all in. I tend to draw inspiration from my environment whether it’s a color palette from a window display, whimsical sculptures from an art gallery or in this case dimensional pieces discovered while traveling.
While visiting friends out west this summer I noticed an old-fashioned butterfly box hanging in their home.
I loved the neutral canvas with each butterfly pinned in place, about to fly away. It inspired me to try and for a similar feeling with paper flowers and pins on a blank paper wrapped canvas. I wanted to give the flowers the same depth and dimension that the pinned butterflies in the box exhibited.
Another source of inspiration I found while shopping this summer was a Pottery Barn style chandelier.
I loved the simple string of butterflies suspended from the ceiling, taking up space in a beautiful way. I was inspired to create dimensional art that I too could hang from the ceiling so I created these stars for my little girl's room:
Finally while at the Phoenix Children’s Museum, a beautiful shimmer wall caught my attention. When I studied the design I saw that it was constructed of cd’s strung together - one flat element twisting and moving on a flat wall yet showing depth and dimension.
It inspired me to create this card with flat paper flowers twisted and glued on many different levels to give it more depth.
I look for inspiration everywhere and sometimes, like it did this summer, it jumps right out at me. I hope you’ll feel inspired to play around with dimension and depth in your next paper crafting project!
